Support for Ukraine

The war has displaced more than a quarter of Ukraine’s population, with 12 million people forced to flee their homes. Throughout the month of June, the community of Pahiatua is holding a fundraiser to support Ukrainian families who have fled to Kazimierz Dolny, Pahiatua’s twin town in Poland.

All money raised from the fundraising activities will go directly to a fund administered by the Mayor of Kazimeirz Dolny for the displaced Ukrainians living there.

FILM SCREENING: “OVERCOMING FATE”

“Overcoming Fate” tells the story of Polish WW2 deportees to Siberia and Kazakhstan, many of them orphaned children.

In 1944, they were invited by Rt Hon Peter Fraser to enjoy a safe haven in New Zealand until the end of the war. Many remained here for life and came to be known as the “Polish Pa-hiatua Children”.

This hauntingly creative film uses archival footage and contemporary material filmed in New Zealand (interviews with survivors) and in Poland (reenactments) for a deeply moving experience.

AUCTION & RAFFLE

A raffle and auction were held to raise funds for the displaced Ukrainians living in Kazimierz Dolny, Pahiatua’s twin town in Poland.

  • The auction opened on 13 June 2022 and closed on 26 June 2022. The auction raised $4,087.00. A big thank you to our partners at the Pahiatua Museum and to the many generous donors of amazing auction items, especially to those who handcrafted items specially for this auction.
  • The raffle was drawn on 13 June

VIRTUAL TOUR

Experience the history of the ‘Polish Pahiatua Children’ with a virtual tour.

See the site of the Polish Children’s Camp, explore the history and culture being protected at the museum and learn more about the historic connection between Poland and Pahiatua.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Pahiatua businesses are encouraged to dress their windows in Blue/Yellow colours during the weekend of 4-5 June to support the film screening. The film screening on Saturday 4 June is likely to have invited guests, including but not limited to the Polish Pahiatua Children, their descendants, and the Polish Ambassador to New Zealand.

Local schools are encouraged to incorporate this into their curriculum – whether its baked goods or art or a performance. Please contact kimberley.stevens@tararuadc.govt.nz if your school would like to be involved.
