Fireworks advice for animal owners and people planning celebrations
17 December 2025
Fireworks can be exciting for us, but for many animals and pets they can be scary and overwhelming.
Here are some tips for both owners and people planning celebrations - a little planning on both sides can make a big difference.
If you have pets, please consider:
🏠 Bringing them inside for the night and keeping doors and gates secure
🛏 Creating a quiet, cosy space where they can hide and feel safe
🎼 Using music or TV to help mask loud bangs
🐶 Making sure collars, tags and microchip details are up to date
🚫 Avoid tying pets up — scared animal are strong animals
For anyone planning fireworks or other celebrations
When it comes to fireworks, if you know your neighbours have animals and you're planning to set off a few bangers, letting them know can be a big help to preparing their household.
Fire restrictions are currently in place across our region. A restricted fire season means anyone who wants to light an open-air fire will need to obtain a permit, which you can apply for at www.checkitsalright.nz.
In some zones of Hawke's Bay, a total fire ban is in force for open-air fires and fireworks, including paper lanterns. Conditions are hot, dry and windy - all it takes is one spark to start a serious fire. Before lighting anything, check what fire season you’re in and what’s allowed: www.checkitsalright.nz
