Consultation on the Draft Reserves Management Plan

14 April 2025

Tararua District Council is inviting the community to have their say on the Draft Reserves Management Plan (RMP), which will guide the management and use of parks and reserves across the district. The two-month consultation period will provide an opportunity for residents to offer feedback through an online survey or written submissions.

"Our reserves play an invaluable role in enhancing the quality of life of our community," says Mayor Tracey Collis. "Our green spaces provide important areas for recreation, relaxation, and social gatherings. Some of them also offer significant ecological value, helping to preserve biodiversity and reduce harmful carbon pollution."

Council manages around 90 parks, reserves, and open spaces throughout the district. However, only two parks—Dannevirke Domain and Ākitio Reserve—currently have dedicated reserve management plans. The new plan will serve to ensure that all reserves are properly cared for and protected, while also meeting the diverse needs of the community.

“Making one big plan for all our parks and reserves is cheaper and easier than making lots of small plans," says Mayor Tracey "This way, we save time and money, and we can manage our reserves in a consistent, fair manner. It’s important to have one clear plan that everyone can understand and follow.”

The draft plan has been developed with input from the community, with the first round of consultation in 2023 highlighting key issues such as park accessibility, environmental protection, and infrastructure needs. The current consultation aims to refine the draft plan and ensure it aligns with the needs and values of residents, iwi, environmental groups, sports clubs, and educational institutions.

The RMP is required by law under the Reserves Act 1977, and it provides a framework for how the Council can manage reserves now and in the future. This consultation is an important step in ensuring that the final plan reflects the views of the community and effectively balances environmental, recreational, and cultural needs.

“Feedback on the plan will help us create a plan that works for the entire district, ensuring our reserves are well maintained and accessible for years to come.”
