Public Survey Open Now: Freedom Camping in the Tararua District
Pre-consultation survey is open until Friday, 28 February 2025
We think it’s important to manage freedom camping in a way that works for everyone–while protecting public spaces and natural places.
We're seeking public input on whether a bylaw should be introduced to manage freedom camping in the district.
While most campers follow best practices, there have been occasional issues with site misuse and nuisance behaviour. Without a bylaw in place, the Council has no formal way to set expectations or address problems when they arise. The survey aims to gather insights from those who camp in the district, whether locals or visitors. Respondents are encouraged to share their experiences—where they camp, what works well, what could be improved, and any effective approaches they have seen in other areas.
The feedback collected will help determine whether a draft bylaw should be developed. If that step is taken, there will be further consultation before any decisions are made.
