Tararua welcomes new citizens
24 October 2024
Tararua District Council undertook a Citizenship Ceremony in Dannevirke on Wednesday 23 October, welcoming 12 people as New Zealand’s newest citizens.
Those gaining citizenship had their origins in Ireland, Scotland, England, Fiji, India and South Africa. Many friends and family members were present to witness what, for those gaining citizenship, is one of the most important days of their lives.
The ceremony was opened by Deputy Mayor Erana Peeti-Webber and an opening karakia was spoken by Duane Edwards from Rangitāne o Tamaki nui-ā-Rua that was appreciated by everyone.
Mayor Tracey Collis then formally welcomed all present and spoke about the unique nature of the Tararua District, focussing on the Manawatū river and Manawatū gorge. The mayor spoke about the welcoming nature of New Zealanders and reminded everyone of the arrival of Polish refugee children in Pahiatua nearly 80 years ago. The mayor told everyone “you will be fulfilling the hopes and dreams that you have brought to our land, in doing so you have demonstrated a commitment of wanting to live in our wonderful country, enjoying a prosperous and promising future. Your commitment to New Zealand does not diminish the importance of your homeland, your heritage, culture and traditions”.
Lorraine Stephenson and Duane Edwards, representing Rangitāne o Tamaki nui-ā-Rua read out the legend of Okatia during the ceremony, explaining how Te Āpiti – the Manwatū Gorge was formed.
Our new citizens were called up individually or as families to give their oath or affirmation of allegiance. They were then welcomed individually by the mayor, elected members of Tararua District Council, the Dannevirke Community Board and a traditional hongi from Lorraine Stephenson and Duane Edwards.
The Mayor concluded the ceremony by saying “You have joined the New Zealand family, New Zealand’s future and your future are now inter-woven and I wish you all the best in your iives as New Zealanders”.
Citizenship ceremonies are held regularly throughout the year and are conducted by Tararua District Council on behalf of the Governor General; Council looks forward to conducting another ceremony, in Pahiatua, in November this year.
