Tararua District Council adopts Annual Budget with lower-than-expected rates increase
24 June 2026
Tararua District Council has today adopted its 2026/27 Annual Budget and Fees and Charges, confirming an average rates increase of 4.83%.
This is well below the 11.84% projected in the Long Term Plan and reflects a deliberate effort to rein in costs while continuing to deliver essential services.
“We know any increase is challenging, but we have done everything we can to keep it as low as possible while still maintaining the services our communities rely on”, says Mayor Scott Gilmore.
“While the future shape of local government remains uncertain due to Government’s amalgamation proposals, one thing has not changed. Our responsibility to continue delivering the services our communities rely on every day and to make decisions that are in the best interests of the Tararua District.”
“We have been hearing clear and consistent messages about affordability. We have heard those messages loud and clear. Affordability has been at the forefront of our thinking throughout the development of this Annual Budget, challenging us to carefully examine our costs, prioritise our spending, and focus on delivering the services our communities value most and will continue to act as the lens we use when considering options and making decisions.”
The Annual Budget sets out Council’s work programme for the year ahead, with continued investment in infrastructure such as roads, water, and community facilities.
Chief Executive Corin Haines says while costs have been reduced where possible, some pressures remain unavoidable.
“A significant portion of the increase is driven by interest costs and depreciation, which are necessary to ensure we can maintain and replace infrastructure over time,” he says.
Council notes the 4.83% increase is an average across the district, and individual rates changes will vary depending on property value, location, and services received.
As there are no significant changes from what was outlined in the Long Term Plan, no formal consultation was undertaken this year.
This Annual Budget also reflects the current delivery of water services, which are expected to transition to a new regional water organisation in the future.
Council's Annual Budget and Fees and Charges for 2026/27 will come into effect from 1 July 2026, and will be available on our website soon at Annual Budget | Tararua District Council.
