IAF Pahiatua Three Waters Upgrade
The upgrade of Pahiatua's three waters infrastructure, backed by Kāinga Ora's Infrastructure Accelerated Fund (IAF), will pave the way for much-needed housing development opportunities in Pahiatua.
Crown funding of $880,000, alongside contributions from the Council and Rangitāne Tamaki nui-ā-Rua of $440,000 and $100,000 respectively, will be utilised to support housing development plans in Pahiatua, while also alleviating strain on impacted wastewater and stormwater systems.
Kāinga Ora has identified housing development opportunities in regions and towns that have an immediate need. Large employers in the manufacturing and agriculture sectors have recognised the need for one- to two-bedroom houses in Tararua, and the former Hillcrest School site, owned by Rangitāne, stands out as a prime location for housing due to its size and proximity to amenities.
Pahiatua, located and in close proximity to key areas like Palmerston North and Massey University, also has good access to the Wairarapa and Hawkes Bay region. The new Te Ahu A Turangi (Manawatu Tararua Highway) will also give easy access to the wider Manawatu once completed.
Tararua District Council is responsible for the upgrade of the wastewater, stormwater, and water supply networks to meet the proposed housing requirements. While progress has been made, including the completion of some work such as minor watermain extensions, there is still some work yet to get underway.
The upgrade includes enhancements to cope with increased volume, relieve pressure on existing systems, and mitigate flooding risks. Anticipated completion dates for various components of the upgrade are set for June 2024, marking significant progress toward meeting the area's infrastructure needs.
