Roaming Dogs, Stock & Impound

Roaming Dogs

If you see any roaming/wandering dogs, please contact Council on 06 374 4080 (North) or 06 376 0110 (South). Council is available around the clock, seven days a week.

All roaming dogs are impounded and taken to the animal shelter by Council. If a registered microchip implant is found or the dog is wearing a registration tag, Council will contact the identified owner and try to reunite them with their dog during normal business hours.  Therefore, we recommend that you call Council to check if your lost dog has been found, especially on weekends or a holiday period.

For this reason, any change of details including the dog owner's name, change of address, phone number or a new owner must be notified to Council by filling out the relevant forms.

Impounded Dogs

The law requires all impounded dogs to be held for at least seven days while the Council attempts to contact the dog owner, or the owner contacts the Council about the dog.

After the seventh day, if the dog owner has not claimed the dog, the Council assumes legal responsibility and ownership of the dog.

If an impounded dog is sick or injured, the Council will seek veterinary treatment/advice as required.

Owners of unclaimed dogs are required to pay registration and impounding fees including sustenance.

Wandering Stock

Stock wandering on roads are dangerous to motorists. If you see any stock wandering or find wandering stock on your land, please contact Council on 06 374 4080 (North) or 06 376 0110 (South) immediately. Council is available around the clock, seven days a week.

When a complaint is made, Council's Animal Control team provide traffic control until the animals are safely dealt with. Council will impound any wandering stock.
