Traffic Services

Traffic services help control the safe and orderly movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, communicate road use restrictions and other information. A good standard of traffic services can contribute significantly to a safe road network.

Council maintain more than 10,000 signs, 498 rails and barriers, 1,294 streetlights and various pavement markings.

Important activities include:

• Network inspections; identification, assessment and recording of asset defect information to enable robust maintenance programming.
• Cyclic patrols; remedying minor defects such as dirty signs and bent sign posts in conjunction with the road patrol.
• Programmed reactive maintenance and renewal; restoration of the appropriate level of service, typically due to assets being damaged or stolen, such as replacement of a sign, guardrail repair, streetlight replacement, etc.
• Proactive renewal; annual pavement marking renewal to restore the appropriate level of service.
• Improvements; such us the upgrade of all streetlights to LED, which Council are currently completing. This is expected to result in significant cost savings, through reduced power usage, reduced outages and maintenance needs, and longer lives.

Delineation Standard

Council aims to provide a consistent driving environment and appropriate level of service for an affordable cost. With this in mind, improvements to the delineation consistency across the network are being completed. The delineation standard will be based on the classification of the road, summarized in the table below.
