IAF Pahiatua Three Waters Upgrade
Background
Kāinga Ora has identified housing development opportunities in regions and towns that have an immediate need. Large employers in the manufacturing and agriculture sectors have recognised the need for one-to-two bedroom houses in Tararua, and the former Hillcrest School site, owned by Rangitāne, stands out as a prime location for housing due to its size and proximity to amenities.
Tū Mai Rā Trust, the post-settlement governance entity for Rangitāne o Wairarapa and Rangitāne o Tamaki nui-ā-Rua, is leading the development of these homes, with support from Kāinga Ora and Tararua District Council, who are delivering the infrastructure upgrades outlined below.
Infrastructure Upgrades
The upgrade of Pahiatua’s three water infrastructure, backed by Kāinga Ora’s Infrastructure Accelerated Fun (IAF), will pave the way for this much-needed housing development opportunity.
Crown funding of $880,000, alongside contributions from the Council of $440,000, and Rangitāne o Tamaki nui-ā-Rua of $100,000, has been utilised to support the development plans in Pahiatua, by upgrading the wastewater, stormwater, and water supply networks.
The upgrade included enhancements to cope with increased volume, relieve pressure on existing systems, and mitigate flooding risks.
What we have done
Our teams have completed the following to meet the area’s infrastructure needs:
- Minor watermain extension
- 660m of new Wastewater rising-main along Princess St
- Wastewater pump station and wet well
- Widened and reworked the existing stormwater channels of 450m
- Upgraded stormwater chambers and driveway access crossings
Now that this infrastructure work is complete, Tū Mai Rā can continue with their housing development for the Pahiatua community.
