Create space in your summer break for Readopoly

The Manawatū Community Hub Libraries launches it’s summer  reading programme, December 9. Now in its second year, Readopoly is available free of charge and helps to instil reading as a lifelong habit while also enhancing children's abilities as readers, writers, and spellers. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for family bonding.

During the summer holidays, many children experience a decline in the knowledge and skills they acquired throughout the school year - a phenomenon known as Summer Learning Loss. To help combat the decline and provide support for children and their families during the summer months Readopoly is a fun and interactive way to encourage reading.

It has been found that young readers are more motivated to read when they can select books that align with their interests. Readopoly allows for the option of children choosing their reading materials however, if participants require assistance, a recommended reading list with helpful suggestions is available.

The boards have been beautifully illustrated by Barry McGoldrick, Graphic Designer from Manawatū District Council. With the addition of an astronaut themed twist, Barry aims to inspire children to embrace the challenge and tap into their imaginations.

Kids will embark on an adventurous journey filled with reading books and completing fun, book-related tasks. Each board comes with dice and3D printed astronaut created in the Makerspace, which participants use to play. Every child who returns their board will receive a prize and be entered into a draw for exciting book prizes. Participants will have a total of six weeks to complete the programme.
