CNC Machine

What is a CNC router?

A CNC router is a type of computer-controlled machine. It is a tech-savvy sculptor, meticulously cutting, chopping, shaping and drilling materials with precision.

We use a Genesis 960R (900 x 600mm bed) CNC router.

As we are in an open room, you can use the following materials in our CNC router:

  • plywood - we stock poplar in 3mm and 5mm thicknesses in a 800 x 600mm size (also available in half and quarter sizes)
  • acrylic - we stock various colours in a 3mm thickness in a 800 x 600mm size (also available in half and quarter sizes)

You can bring in your own materials provided you let us know in advance so we can make sure it is suitable for our machine and for use in our communal space.

Please note, we do not allow MDF in our machines.

CNC routing can be messy, however the machine is smart and has its own dust protection. We’ve gone one step further and added supplementary dust protection that is also a HEPA filter to benefit the communal space.

As with all makerspace equipment, PPE including safety glasses and ear protection is available from a team member.

If you’re worried about the noise while you’re working, or if others are worried about the noise as they use the other machines, ear protection is available from a team member.

We use VRCarve Pro for CNC design.

Our charges are based on materials used, not on machine usage. Please consult our price list for more information.
