Checkmate in the Digital Age: Modernising Chess
Manawatū Community Hub Libraries has unveiled a unique Pokémon-themed chess set, crafted by the MCHL Makerspace team and with the help of Mike a regular makerspace patron. Blending technology, creativity, and nostalgia for all ages the set combines 3D printing, laser cutting, and creative design, is now available for in-house library use.
The pieces have distinct base shapes to help players easily identify their moves: pawns are circular, rooks are octagonal, and each type of piece has been thoughtfully integrated into the chessboard design.
Mike, recently contributed to enhancing the community chessboard. Taking the initiative, Wildey meticulously polished the board and applied a glossy resin finish, ensuring it not only shines but also remains durable for years to come. His thoughtful donation aims to preserve the chessboard’s quality while making it more visually appealing.
PLA filament was used for the 3D-printed pieces, with the design based on free files from Thingiverse. The set also includes a reference key for piece identification. The project began over three years ago but was delayed due to the move to Te Āhuru Mōwai.
The board itself is an artistic masterpiece, laser engraved and cut from plywood, with intricate details that add a personal touch to the set. “We wanted to make something fun and engaging that reflects the creativity of the community,” said Stew Wilson, Makerspace Specialist. “And of course, Pokémon is a beloved theme that appeals to so many!”
This unique chess set was designed with the community in mind, featuring custom pop culture elements. It is available for everyone to use; it promotes inclusivity and a digital escape to reconnect with classic pastimes. Whether you’re a seasoned chess player or a casual fan of Pokémon, this set is sure to make your next game a memorable experience.
