Requested information: Request for how much MDC has spent over three years on boy racer-related road damage, how much came from ratepayers, and related impacts, responses, and trends.

Status: Complete

Response:

The information you have requested is below;
1. In the last three years, what has MDC spent on repairing or maintaining streets/roads which are used as skid spots for boy racers over the last three years?
Council has specifically responded to 2 locations in the last 3 years at Halcombe Road, Kakariki, and Banks Road/Kaimatarau Road intersection near Rongotea.  Incurred costs for these 2 events was $1,500.00.  Other minor complaints received via the customer request system have been generally covered under the environmental maintenance category for general district wide litter/debris removal/street sweeping.
2. And of this total, how much of this money was ratepayers?
As with the majority of works undertaken by Council in the roading activity, the central Government subsidy is 51%, and local ratepayer share of 49% of the cost of doing the works.
3. How do you think ratepayers would feel about money being used on fixing issues caused by boy racers?
Council will respond to customer requests, or notifications from NZ Police to attend to these issues to ensure we maintain the Levels of Service to maintain the condition cleanliness of the roads.
4. What is the general consensus from locals on boy racers and skids occurring in the street?
Council does not hold information that answers this question.
5. Do councils across our region share intel on the goings-ons of boy racers/events they have planned?
NZ Police are the intel agency to seek a response to this.  Council only responds post events when customers advise us.
6. What do you see as a solution for halting anti-social behaviour on roads?
Council does not currently hold a position or view on this matter.
7. Has there been a decrease in boy-races or skids in the recent weeks due to rising fuel costs, or have they carried on as usual?
Council doesn’t have information to speculate either way.
