Norsewood
Norsewood, at the northern end of Tararua, prides itself on its unique heritage. Unique because of its Scandinavian heritage, trolls, scandi wheel, proximity to the main highway and its strong resident community.
Settled in 1872-75 by Scandinavians and others from Northern Europe, who on their 40 acre blocks, made a living by clearing the dense bush. Norsewood has retained its Scandinavian heritage. Streets carry the original names and Scandinavian folk dancing is still taught at the local school. The Norsewood Pioneer Museum offers an excellent collection of memorabilia from the pioneering days including an original room from a bush-fellers hut.
Norsewood features Johannas World, Museum, 100% Natural clothing shop, gardens, the unique troll stroll (Kiwi Walk), art and craft. Accommodation and food includes hotel, farmstay, backpackers, tearooms, hotel meals and local store.
Anzac Park is situated 4kms north of Norsewood. This domain was renamed ANZAC Park in 1923 to commemorate the World War I men of the district. There are lovely sheltered bush walks and the park is also a great secluded spot for camping.
When visiting Norsewood be aware of the trolls, which are dotted around the township. Norsewood is perhaps most famous for its troll theme which draws on Scandinavian mythology. Follow the signs and you may be able to see one first hand!
The many activities and attractions in Norsewood include The Bindalsfaering - a traditional Norwegian fishing boat, Pioneer Cottage Museum, antiques, the Norsewood hotel and the local café.
Several craft shops are dotted around the village. Norsewood also boasts about their nine hole golf course which welcomes visiting golfers. Come and enjoy a game of golf on a country course.
