Law changes for charities and incorporated societies
There are about 24,000 incorporated societies in New Zealand, and about 7,000 of those are registered as charities. Incorporated societies are democratic groups, and like charities, some are large businesses like organisations, and some are small sporting clubs.
The Incorporated Societies Act 2022 came into force on 5 October 2023 and updates a piece of legislation over 100 years old, and quite a lot has changed.
In addition, the Charities Act 2005 has been amended by the Charities Amendment Bill, which came into force on 5 July 2023 and there are a wide range of changes for charities to be aware of.
