Turning old porcelain into new possibilities
Phoenix Recycling Group and Central Environmental are working together at the Manawatū Resource Recovery Park in Feilding to give old porcelain parts from power transformers, transmission and distribution assets a second life and save them from landfill.
This new recycling opportunity is a smart and cost-effective way to recycle these porcelain parts, which have been traditionally disposed of in landfills for the last 140 years in New Zealand. Instead of being wasted, the porcelain is crushed by Central Environmental and reused as base material for roads and building foundations. It’s not only cheaper than dumping it in landfill, but it also helps reduce the need for new raw materials. Because porcelain can be recycled over and over again, this new service is a big win for the environment.
Phoenix and Central Environmental are also making it easy for energy companies to take part. They’ve studied the different sizes of transformers to figure out exactly how much porcelain can be recovered. This helps create a simple, tailored process for recycling across the energy sector.
Together, Phoenix and Central Environmental are showing how we can turn waste into something useful. Their work is a great example of how local businesses can help protect the environment, support our economy, and reduce landfill waste. Manawatū District Council is proud to support this kind of smart, sustainable thinking that benefits our community.
