Tail Wagging Reminder

Whether your dog is a playful pup or a wise old friend, all dogs in the Manawatū District must be registered by Thursday, 31 July.

All dogs over three months of age are legally required to be registered. You can renew your dog’s registration online or in person. Please note: unlike previous years, a new tag will not be issued.

Last year, MDC introduced lifetime registration tags made from recycled materials, along with Doggone – a simple, text-based pet reuniting service. We’re pleased to announce that Doggone is back for a second year and remains available to all registered dogs. Each registration tag includes a unique code that allows finders to text and quickly reunite lost dogs with their families.

“We’re excited to extend the Doggone service for another year as part of the 2025 registration,” says Jason Rosenbrock, MDC Regulatory Services Manager. “This initiative strengthens our pet-friendly community and supports the compassionate, proactive work of our Animal Control Officers.”

Your registration enables Council to uphold the Dog Control Act 1996 and ensure compliance with local bylaws and policies. Our Animal Control team investigates and responds to all reported dog complaints and incidents across the district.

  • Enhancing community safety through proactive dog management
  • Reunite lost pets quickly and safely with their owners
  • Encouraging responsible dog ownership
  • Protecting the rights of responsible dog owners by addressing dog-related issues
  • Providing education and advice on preventing and managing dog problems
  • Responding to reports of aggressive or roaming dogs
  • Dealing with irresponsible owners through enforcement and support
  • Patrolling parks, reserves, and other public spaces
  • Managing and responding to dog complaints and other animal nuisances
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records in the National Dog Database
  • Running the animal shelter, where impounded dogs receive food, water, shelter, and daily exercise

Essentially, it helps keep our community safe, supports animal welfare, and ensures that dogs and people can enjoy our public spaces together.
