Matariki at the Makino

Community. Water. Shared Experiences.

Over 10 weeks, we are bringing the story of Matariki to life through water, community, and shared experiences building week by week toward a Matariki Pool Party celebration.

The theme for Matariki 2026 is "Matariki Herenga Waka – For Everyone," emphasizing inclusion, unity, and shared heritage.

Whether you are learning to swim, bringing the kids, aqua lessons or just popping in for a dip, there is something here for you.

Come along. Be part of it.

What to Expect

Each week introduces a new Matariki star, with activities, displays, and small moments that connect to swimming, wellbeing, and community.

As the weeks go on, you will see Makino transform into a living story created by everyone who walks through the doors.

A Fresh Start & Connection

Matariki represents the Māori New Year and a time to reflect on the past and look ahead to the future. At Makino this connects to the community gathering to learn, swim and take part in activities together.

We begin by coming together as a community. Share your swimming achievements, favourite Makino memories, or goals for the future on our Reflections Board.

A display celebrating Makino events such as Swim School, Bomb Competitions and Pool Parties will be available to view in reception.

Remembering Together

Pōhutukawa represents remembrance and honouring the past. At Makino this connects with the idea that swimming knowledge and water safety are often passed down through families.

Take a moment to honour someone important to you a loved one, a teacher, or someone who helped you learn to swim by adding a message to a tag and adding it to our living Pōhutukawa tree.

Freshwater and Water Confidence

Waitī represents freshwater including rivers, lakes and streams, and has one of the strongest connections to the Makino Aquatic Centre. Makino is a freshwater facility where many local children first learn to swim and gain confidence in the water.

This week we celebrate freshwater and the skills that keep us safe. See simple water safety in action and discover how small skills make a big difference.

Ready for the Ocean

Waitā represents the ocean and connects to Makino through preparing swimmers for safe experiences in open water environments.

From pool to beach, build confidence for open water. Learn how your swimming skills help keep you safer in the ocean during Swim School.

Where Water Comes From

Ever wondered how Makino works behind the scenes? This week is all about rain, water systems, and how we care for this vital resource.

Enjoy the Outdoors

Tupuārangi connects to the environment and outdoor spaces around Makino including the outdoor pools and playground.

Hiwa-i-te-Rangi represents hopes and aspirations and connects strongly with swimming achievements and future goals.
